28 March 2026

SALIZAH ABDULLAH
6th President, NAWEM
Term 2026-2028
Life Member Since 2001
NAWEM 6th President Acceptance Speech
Delivered during the 33rd Annual General Meeting
Bismillahirahmanirahim.
Assalamualaikum & Good Morning,
Appreciation & Commitment
Firstly, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all EXCO members, members, and friends of NAWEM for attending our Annual General Meeting today and for staying throughout the session.
As we all know, it is currently the school holiday period and the first Hari Raya weekend in Malaysia. I am certain many of you have other commitments and celebrations to attend. Yet, you chose to be here, and that, to me, is a true reflection of the commitment and love you have for NAWEM, as we celebrate our 33rd anniversary this year.
That same level of respect and affection is what I hold for NAWEM, having been a life member of this association for the past 25 years. From joining as an ordinary member in 2001, to serving as an Executive Committee member, Vice President of Administration, and Deputy President, have found immense joy in fulfilling my roles and responsibilities.
Today is especially meaningful, as I am deeply honoured to be elected as the 6th and perhaps the youngest President to serve NAWEM.
This journey and personal milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support, guidance, and most importantly, the trust bestowed upon me by all my sisters in NAWEM - especially the three Presidents whom I have had the honour and privilege of working with.
Lessons from Three Remarkable Leaders
In my first official address, instead of presenting the blueprint and strategic action plans that the new committee and I have prepared for the 2026–2028 term, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to three remarkable leaders.
Allow me to share the invaluable lessons they have imparted; lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today:
Dr Bien Mei Nien
She was like a strict convent headmistress to me - one whom I deeply respect and cherish - taught me that hard work, conviction, and a clear sense of purpose are essential to staying focused amidst noise and distractions.
There are no excuses for failure.
There will always be a way forward, if only we are willing to look deep enough to find solutions.
Dato’ Shamsimar Yusof
She is living proof that age is just a number.
To this day, she remains more adventurous, joyful, and youthful than I could ever aspire to be.
She taught me that leadership is never about being autocratic.
It is about honesty, sincerity, and uplifting others when we are in a position to do so.
She also reminds us that balance in life is essential for our well-being and sanity.
Ms Sarojini Ruth
The longest-serving President of NAWEM, demonstrated that patience is a virtue and that humility is never a sign of weakness.
She showed me that integrity, respect, and trust are invaluable assets that must be built and preserved.
Most importantly, she instilled in me the belief that learning is a lifelong journey; one that keeps leaders relevant and adaptable.
—————-
To Dr Bien, Dato’ Syam, Ms Saro, and all NAWEM Past Presidents, Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Puan Mariam Tun Sulaiman: thank you for your guidance, your trust, and your blessings.
I look forward to carrying out my responsibilities as the next President of NAWEM.

Looking Ahead
To all NAWEM members, this appointment comes with great responsibility, especially as we navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain future, both locally and globally.
NAWEM will continue to do our very best to serve our members, supporting you in navigating risks and overcoming challenges.
I also look forward to hosting NAWEM’s upcoming Town Hall cum Hari Raya Potluck Get-Together, where we will share more on our plans for 2026/2027.
An official announcement will be made soon.
In the meantime, do continue to follow and subscribe to NAWEM’s social media platforms on Facebook and LinkedIn.
Thank you once again, and I wish everyone Selamat Hari Raya and a blessed weekend.
Yours sincerely,
SALIZA ABDULLAH
